Strengthening 12 tertiary hospitals in Punjab, AJK and Islamabad for offering MDR-TB care (July 01, 2015 to Dec 31, 2017)

MDR-TB care arrangements and practices vary widely across teaching hospitals; hospitals assisted by providing supplies and trained medical and allied staff for offering quality MDR-TB care as per program-endorsed protocols.

  • Location: Ten hospitals in Punjab; and one hospital each in Islamabad and Muzafarabad (AJK) districts.
  • Activities:
    • Maintain outpatient and inpatient premises for MDR-TB care, includes infection control;
    • Strengthen hospital laboratory for MDR-TB diagnostics (e.g. GeneXpert); also link with reference laboratory
    • Arrange MDR-TB drugs (through National TB Program); also support hospitals to store and manage MDR-TB drugs;
    • Manage additional MDR-TB medical and allied staff (i.e. 8 person), including ongoing training and supervision, at each participating hospital
    • Deliver program-endorsed community-based MDR-TB care, free-of-charge, at each participating hospital;
    • Maintain patient records; also monitor and support the hospital and community based care (by facility/project staff)
    • Manage social support for each registered MDR-TB patient and his/her supporter (i.e. food pack and travel reimbursement on each monthly follow-up visit to a hospital)
  • Outputs:
    • outpatient and inpatient premises and drug storage maintained for MDR-TB care at 12 public tertiary hospitals
    • 96 project staff and respective hospital staff supported for delivering MR-TB care at 12 hospitals.
    • 30 senior doctors at 12 tertiary hospitals and 562 doctors at DHQ/THQ/RHC received refresher training on MDR-TB care.
